The Photographs of Steve McCurry in Kashan

Under the first of the summer’s afternoon sun in Kashan, the joy of seeing the house where the girl with the green eyes and red-brown shawl finally settled made me forget the heat. She was staring at me from behind a blue pond. I thought to myself, ‘This girl doesn’t even know it, but she has travelled across the entire world!’ She went from Afghanistan to America, then onto the cover of National Geographic magazine and, from there, to every other corner of the globe; now, here she is in Iran. All this travel, far and wide, because one photographer clicked the camera shutter in the right place at the right time: Steve McCurry.

The house was built in the traditional, old Kashan style, but was much plainer. The colour white dominated but was broken here and there by the grey fence. A fruitful fig tree stood like a sentinel at the edge of the courtyard. All this could be seen alongside 240 prints of Steve McCurry’s photographs, which were hung throughout the house. These photos were the products of Steve’s journeys around the world – mostly in Asia – from India to Afghanistan, but also across Latin America. There wasn’t a single photograph that didn’t reflect all the colours and variety of people around the world.

We entered into a courtyard and, along with the Roshanbakht brothers, wandered through the galleries, all of which were connected by one long hallway. Next to the main entrance there were steps that led down to the courtyard, as in the style of a garden pit (sunken courtyard). We decided to start our tour from there, on the same level as the main entrance…
