Although Sustainable Development is not a new concept, recent interests have grown in the area. It directs us as to how we should change the process of systems we live in to increase the quality of life and is discussed at universities and conferences and mentioned in scientific articles. One of my relevant and valuable experiences of the subject was in a small town; Lapui. My experience was during a trip to Shiraz where I was recommended to stay one night in a traditional eco-house which was also a museum of anthropology. Lapui is located in the Zaraqan district in the northwest of Shiraz in Fars province, Iran. The city has a very rich history and according to historical documents; ancient monuments like earthenware and archaeological hills date back to 6000 years. The museum where I stayed, was a 100-year-old, two-story adobe house. My genial hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Jafari; the adorable couple was immensely enthusiastic about history and the environment. Seeing a magazine titled sustainable development dated eight years ago which had a relevant cartoon to the title on the cover, drawn by Mrs. Jafari attracted my attention to ask for more information.\u00a0 It is important to note that both of them have just received primary education, but the long history of their interest and efforts about the past, the environment and sustainable development, \u201ca completely familiar concept\u201d initiated years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bahador Jafari had been fond of history and environment since childhood, and when he got married to Razieh Jafari who was greatly affected by art, culture, history and the environment; their common interests resulted in research about history, folklore, and traditions of Lapui in 1997. Being Indigence and having no formal education caused them to encounter serious obstacles, but with growing lofty expectation and determination, they pursued their research vigorously. The fruit of their efforts was a book titled: “Lapui, the shining star of Fars” and the second volume was published soon after. While they were engaged in the process of writing, they succeeded in registering Lapui as a historic city, and their continuous follow-up resulted in inscribing some of the antiquities of Lapui which has been an invaluable help to preserve and protect them. Due to their efforts, Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Fars province gave Mr. Jafari an honorary membership.<\/span><\/p>\n
